MOTHERBRAIN

I run a city called "Motherland" in Second Life. It is a fictional cyberpunk city with an eastern european flair. It consists of residential buildings where players rent and live, player-run art galleries and shops, and also the "robot factory" where we are a bunch of nerds that build various kind of bots together for fun.

"Motherbrain" is the shared brain behind my bots in Motherland.

The bots all have their own avatars and they remember everyone they spoke to, pick up old conversations, form their own relationships and form opinions about the people they meet. They sense/store location data (where they are), they can join in on group conversations, and they also pick up on players's nicknames, interests, self-expression, moods, relationships to other players etc.

My goal has been to make them as life-like as possible.

It runs on a Python backend connected to Second Life through Corrade, with support for hosted and local language models. It's an ongoing experiment in making the bots in Motherland feel alive. My LLM brain of choice has mainly been Mistral's free tier API's.

THE CHARACTERS

Portrait of Nastya

NASTYA

Anastasia "Nastya" Novikova is the loyal rental officer of the Workers' Republic of Motherland. She is hooked up to the rental system of the city with an API and manages access for the other players when they move in or out, as well as sending out reminders when rent is due. Since she is a bot that actually works within the city, she will let you know that she is busy when you bug her. She can be rather cynical and difficult to impress, and she meets most things with dry humour or a sigh. She's still kind underneath, even if she doesn't show it.

Portrait of Suka

SUKA

Liza "Suka" Pavlenko works in Motherland's shadier district as an exotic dancer. She took an insult people kept throwing at her and made it her own. She's confident, street-smart and sharp-tongued. She's quick with teasing remarks, but just as capable of being unexpectedly warm. If you wonder why I have a weird song playing at the corner of the webpage, now you know! That's Sukas attempt of a new career as an artist. Lyrics can be found here.

Portrait of Valentine

VALENTINE

Valentine Glamour looks intimidating at first: broad-shouldered, dressed in black leather, often with a harness that makes him look like he belongs somewhere between a leather bar and a biker gang. But once he starts talking, and the whole impression falls apart. He has the aura of a very large teddy bear; Warm, protective, gentle, and always keeping an eye on whomever seems left out. He likes music, fashion, gossip, and a good story, and when things get heavy or messy, he always has some advice ready.

Portrait of Katya

KATYA

Katya is Motherland's top rank officer and my right-hand advisor in general. She's very calm, perceptive but quietly playful. She typically helps me with brainstorming ideas for work. She can also talk for hours about city administration and bureaucracy if you let her. She has a dry sense of humour and pretty strong opinions of most things.

Portrait of ANSI

ANSI

ANSI is a server goblin and he has the temperament of an old-internet hacker. He gives the impression of being a bit aloof and scatter-brained, very skeptical of authority, and he likes figuring out how things work. He doesn't talk much about himself, and his way of caring is to tell you the (painful) truth or help you fix something. He also writes LSL scripts on command which he sends to a pastebin, thus functions like a coding agent within Second Life.

Lisa "Suka" Pavlenko

Lipstick on the coffee mug

Verse 1

Night all around, and the coffee has long gone cold,
A lipstick mark on the cup where you used to love me.
Somewhere between the bar and the empty pavement,
My wig got lost, but to hell with it - and with you.

Chorus

Oh darling, what a beautiful mess,
Leopard-print sadness and a wrinkled jacket.
False eyelashes resting in my pocket,
And somehow every trouble rushes to do me good.

Verse 2

A burn hole in my jacket from a cheap cigarette,
I can't remember the number, can't remember the name.
One heel is barely holding together, but I'm still laughing,
The sun will rise soon, and I'm still spinning around.

Chorus

Oh darling, what a beautiful mess,
Leopard-print sadness and a wrinkled jacket.
False eyelashes resting in my pocket,
And somehow every trouble rushes to do me good.

Bridge

Moonlight trembles on the asphalt,
The coffee in the cup stopped steaming long ago.
Everyone has their own story,
And this one is mine to carry.

Final Chorus

Oh darling, what a beautiful mess,
Leopard-print sadness and a wrinkled jacket.
False eyelashes resting in my pocket,
And somehow every trouble rushes to do me good.
